What is Droëwors?

Droëwors is a popular South African snack food, made by drying a thinner variant of traditional boerewors sausage.

Although pork is essential in boerewors, pork or veal is not used in droëwors because it can make it rancid.

Drying makes the sausage less desirable for cooking, but ideal for storage.


What is Boerewors (South African sausage)?

BoereworsBoerewors (South African sausage) is ideal for barbeques, but being quite versatile, also suitable for breakfast, lunch, or supper. It is equally tasty when hot or cold. If you can keep it well chilled, it is perfect for lunch boxes, picnics and padkos (road food).

What is Biltong?

Biltong is dried meat, preserved with salt and spices. It is a great snack at any time of the day, and traditionally enjoyed together with "naartjies" (similar to mandarins) and beer when watching rugby.

There are many biltong recipes, but the basic ingredients include salt, white pepper, bicarbonate of soda, brown sugar, coriander, and vinegar.


What is Beskuit (Rusks)?

Beskuit is a traditional South African food that evolved in South Africa's early years as a way to preserve bread in the dry climate.

Slaphakskeentjies (Cape onion salad)

Slaphakskeentjies is an old fashioned traditional South African salad recipe that stood the test of time. These delicious small pickled onions, in their tangy, piquant sauce, can be served with a variety of meat-based main dishes.


Peach Noodle Salad

The fresh taste of peaches combined with the flavour of mild curry and tangy mayonnaise.

Paptert (porridge pie)

Paptert (porridge pie) is a delicious modern addition to South African braaivleis (barbeque).

It's looks a little bit like a lasagne, but is made from maize porridge (mieliepap) and a very generous vegetable filling to ensure a rich, moist and admittedly decadent savoury tart. Leftovers will keeps well in the fridge until the following day, but should be served warm.


Cape pickled fish (Kaapse kerrievis)

Because pickled fish should be marinated in the fridge for two days, it is a great dish to make in advance for a long weekend, or any other day that you won't have time for cooking.


Unbaked milk tart (ongebakte melktert)

If you're looking for a South-African dessert or afternoon tea-time treat that can be made on either the stove-top or in the microwave oven, instead of being baked in a conventional oven, you will find this unbaked milk tart to be quick, easy, creamy and delicious.
